Keep filename in sync with the note name

Currently, NotePlan doesn't touch the filename after giving it an initial name. So if you change the note name, it won't update the filename anymore.

Great to have as a configuration option at least.

Thinking twice - sometimes I fuse two redundant notes into one by giving them the same header first so that all the backlinks update correctly. If Noteplan were to change the file name automatically, fusing the backlinks would not be so easy. So I canceled my vote for this feature request and would like it to be an option, if it comes to be.

To use another tool to work with NP files like Obsidian or Logseq, this is a significant feature and would increase interoperability substantially. It also assists with the data security idea behind using md/txt files in the first place, as moving to another tool for any reason is easier.

I would realy like this. One of the great selling points of Noteplan is the fact that the underlying files are not hidden. You can navigate your way around your notes using standard tools. But if the file name no longer represents what the note is about that really degrades the benefit. I like the idea of having the file name field top left. It gives users the flexibility, for example, to create shortened file names without spaces if they so desire. Update: I just realised I upvoted this when what I'm asking for is actually not what the request is asking for. I would prefer the file name and note name are allowed not to be NOT in sync. I will copy this comment to the other feature request: https://noteplan.canny.io/general-feature-request/p/choose-n…

Currently, the only way to keep the title and underlying filename in sync will be to do it manually in finder.

This is a known issue and will be addressed in an upcoming released. There are a few UI components that need to be created to complete this functionality.

Side note, if you import markdown files, Noteplan does not respect the name of the file but uses the first line as the title.

Matthias: Unfortunately, this is one of the things that differ in that NotePlan uses the title (first line) as the name of note hence the differences. I have been bitten by this on several occasions and is one of the things that we need to expose the actual disk filename because it will almost always get out of "sync" because the name on disk is created ONCE and is never changed, regardless of note title changes, etc.

I like the idea of making file name sync a user option and updating wiki links. Obsidian supports this option the other way around.

May 1, 2021

I'd vote for not making it sync. 1. link only to the file name (optionally to the header) 2. in the side bar, display the file name (optionally the note header) 3. optionally keep them in sync. I need short file names that have only characters, numbers, dashes and underscores, and I'd like to be free of those constraints in headers for printing eg. with Marked 2. The way Noteplan is now, I still need to keep my nvalt library of md files for that purpose. Which is fine, maybe I'd keep it anyway because a zettelkasten needs to be separate anyway.

nopi: I agree with Nopi, linking the two would invalidate another feature request which I think makes more sense: choosing whether to wiki-link to Note Titles or to Note Filenames. Also as Nopi says, I think the left sidebar should have the option of viewing the filenames rather than the note title.. That way people can correct any mismatch of filename and title within Noteplan manually and also preserver interactions in other apps.

What would happen if I changed the file name, would it update the note name too?

Apr 12, 2021

The name of the note in the sidebar is the note title (first line). The filename is not being updated as the note title changes. The plan was to add a filename field to the note top left beside the folder display so you can edit it manually and [a preference to change what NotePlan should use as reference](https://noteplan.canny.io/interoperability/p/choose-note-ref…). In Obsidian the filename is used as a reference and the links are updated when the filename changes, but note title and filename can be two different things there. But a maintenance method or plugin could be made. It's maybe a good plugin candidate.

Apr 13, 2021

Eduard Metzger: I agree on the plugin candidate. But it seems that you aren't aware of situations where note name in sidebar and note title in the note itself do differ. It might be a bug, that is difficult to reproduce, but it happened.

Rhubarb: Have merged it with this request. They sound like they do the same!
