Eduard Metzger: YAY!!!!
Eduard Metzger I just saw the change logs for version 3.8. Thank you so much for implementing this!
Would checklists as _templates_ work? So each time you need to, say, go on a trip, you would insert your day trip template in the day you're packing's note, and check them off as you do them.
This is a fairly niche case, but almost everyone will probably use it at some point it if its available. I seem to remember that the Things app had checklists that were rendered a little differently, and acted like sub-tasks. Casper Thalen why would sub-tasks not be enough? Is there something that is different about a checklist?
Jonathan Clark: to my understanding NotePlan doesn’t support subtasks. Also, a checklist and a task differ in the fact that a task is tied to something that needs to be done and a checklist can conceptualy be much broader
Casper Thalen: you can have sub-tasks. Just indent them with a tab character. Though at the moment this is only a visual connection between them and the 'parent' tasks; checking off subtasks doesn't affect the parent, nor vice versa. What is on a checklist that doesn't need to be done? In my use case checklist items are normally much smaller tasks (like packing a particular item in luggage), but they still need to be done.
Jonathan Clark: I’m aware and utilize the indention of tasks to create some form of context. I would call it a heuristic/workaround/hack for subtasks. Calling it “support” or “implemented” is too much of a stretch to me. Example for a non-task checklist: A pack list for vacation. I want to have a full list of all 25 things I need to pack on a weekend trip. I want to keep track of what I packed by checking them off but I don’t want to flood my system with 25 new tasks.
Casper Thalen: How should tasks be changed so you would call subtasks "implemented"? Also, how would checklists behave differently from normal tasks? If you have a checklist (as tasks) in a note, you can check them off one by one just like with a checklist. You don't want them to be recognized as tasks in the filters? Or if you add them to a daily note they should not appear in the overdue? Is that the only difference?
Casper Thalen: I do know what you mean, as I don't feel like 'pack toothbrush' is a full task either. But I can't yet come up with a convincing set of reasons for _needing_ to treat them differently, so that's why I was probing.
IMHO the only real difference in how they should be treated is not to be counted in the stats for open/closed tasks. If they're overdue, I want to know about them. Potentially I'd want a third state (i.e. cancelled) just like regular tasks, for when this particular checklist item isn't relevant for some reason. (Like 'passport' if I'm not travelling out of the country.)
Released in today's update v3.8 on the AppStore!
