Obsidian Canvas interoperability

Obsidian has this new Canvas format to combine and arrange notes visually. I think this is very useful. Some sort of interoperability would be nice. Suppressing making a new note when clicking a link to a canvas file [[file.canvas]] that was made in Obsidian would be great, and/or opening the corresponding file in Obsidian (in macos).
