Keep folders collapsed when dragging a note
complete
Jon Plummer
This appears to still be an issue, but it’s marked as complete? The folders popping open (macOS) makes organizing a bunch of existing notes into their right folders a painful task.

Jon Plummer: Fixed now, will be available in the next release.

The sidebar folders now always stay closed unless you use the "Show in Sidebar" note menu option.
Available in the beta, coming soon as release.

Eduard Metzger: where do i enable it? The folders still expand when dropping notes (as of September 2023, v3.9.7)
Eduard Metzger
Marcin Ignac: Oh sorry, I think I confused something, the folders stays collapsed if you open the note. But dragging still opens them. Back to my list of tasks!
Marcin Ignac
Eduard Metzger: could you please re-open this issue if it's still planned?
Eduard Metzger
Marcin Ignac: Fixed it, will be available in the next beta/release: https://testflight.apple.com/join/fm9q4OjE

Another possible solution to this design problem would be to adopt a multi-pane document viewer, with one pane for the folder hierarchy and another for the contents of the selected folder.
(This design is similar to the old Windows Explorer, or to mail clients with a three-pane view that goes folders->messages->contents.)
As an added benefit, this could make drag and drop operations between multiple folders quite easier. If it were possible to, say, hide the folders pane, it could also enable focusing on a specific work area, by only seeing sibling notes.

I agree about keeping folders closed when moving notes or opening notes in the command bar. Opening all the folders makes the sidebar messy. Maybe there could be an option in the note to show note location in the folder tree.

Setting to disable folder expansion on note change

It would be great if we could disable the default behavior of note folders automatically expanding in the sidebar when a note is updated. I like to keep the note folders collapsed at all times, and only expand them manually when I’m searching for information.

I had this originally planned for the upcoming release. Might be moved to the one after that, but definitely one of the next things I want to improve.

And, magnified even more on iOS. Good quality of life request Brad! 😀

Always keeping it collapsed makes it difficult to locate a note, which you open using the Command Bar or following a link. This was the behavior on iOS and I never knew where the note is.
How to avoid this problem? Or do you know any app which behaves differently, so I can check it out?

Eduard Metzger: Obsidian and VS Code both come to mind. I honestly think NotePlan is the only application I've used that has this behavior. I understand your use case, and it would fine to keep that as the default behavior, but having a setting to turn that off would be greatly appreciated. As a keyboard-dominant user, I gain no benefit from seeing the note folders expand in the sidebar since I can quickly access it via the command bar.
Thanks for replying, Eduard! I am really enjoying NotePlan!
Eduard Metzger
Dan Chilton: Ok thanks for elaborating. I can see that Obsidian is not expanding. I see they have solved the problem partially by letting you drag the note icon, so you can rearrange the note into another folder. And another point is that there is a menu item to "Reveal in navigation".
If it helps right now, in the latest update you can hit Option+CMD+/ to collapse all folders immediately, till I figure out how to solve all the problems of folders not auto-expanding. I think Obsidian has good solutions already.

Eduard Metzger: in the Mac version you show the containing folder for the file at the top of the window, so you always know where a given file is located. No need to see it in the sidebar.
Additionally, that folder marker would be nice to have on the mobile devices.
With that, there is no need to expand the folders to show where a file is located & can stay collapsed or open based on how the user interacts with the sidebar.
Eduard Metzger
Dan Chilton: Just noticed VC Code does open the folder if I use CMD+P to open a file. Even if I go to the tab it opens it.
